Authors Note: Hi, I’m Jeremy. I’ve lived in this neighborhood for over ten years. Let me share my experiences with you and what you need to know from a resident’s perspective.
History of Colonia Roma Mexico City
Roma Norte’s history begins in the early 20th Century when affluent residents began to leave the bustling Historic Centre (Centro Historico) situated around 4km to the northeast for a little peace and refinement.
Over time, this area became attractive to domestic and international business owners and local politicians, who sought to create a European-style residence area. The result was heavy investment in building parks, leafy avenues, and art-nouveau mansions.
Roma Norte has evolved over the last century, and while it was damaged heavily in the 1985 earthquake, it still possesses the charm and the aesthetic details from its halcyon origins.

Roma Norte is located in the central, southwest area of Mexico City. It sits in the middle of Juarez, Condesa, Doctores, and Roma Sur neighborhoods. Among the 16 boroughs that make up Mexico City, Roma Norte holds a distinguished spot in the Cuauhtémoc borough.

Now that we’ve covered how to get to Roma Norte and a little bit about what you can expect when you arrive, let’s get onto the exciting stuff: what is there to do? I am sure you’ll have the most incredible time here, and here are examples of how you can spend your time in my favorite Mexico City neighborhood.
Mexico City Tours
Taking part in a tour is a perfect way to familiarize yourself with a neighborhood like Roma Norte. This area is also a central jumping-off point for tours to other interesting city areas, reinforcing why this is such a great spot to stay here.
Walking tours here offer a great opportunity to spend time with someone who knows this area well as they talk you through different aspects of life in the neighborhood. Some tours focus on the local cuisine, allowing you to taste local food delicacies from markets and street vendors.
Alternatively, you could take a walking tour to absorb Roma Norte’s vintage charm and interact with the close-knit community. These tours also take you through the neighborhood’s nooks and crannies, explaining the area’s rich history and architectural landscape.
On the other hand, bicycle tours afford a broader exploration of Roma Norte and its neighboring areas, covering Avenida Chapultepec and beyond. Strap on a helmet and enjoy a gentle ride through the neighborhood with a local guide for some real fun and education.
Museums and Galleries
This city is home to almost 200 museums and art galleries, some of which are located in the Roma Norte neighborhood.
MODO
One of the most popular is the MODO Museo del Objetos (Museum of Objects), which has more than 30,000 pieces from the 19th and 20th centuries. This was the first museum in the city dedicated to design and communications, and it is located on Colima Street, number 145.
Casona de Leonora Carrington
Additionally, you could visit Casona de Leonora Carrington, once the home of the famous surrealist painter and author Leonora Carrington. The three-story home has not been changed much since she died in 2011, except for the addition of many of her works, which have now been displayed.
Find this museum on Chihuahua Street 194, just off the main avenue of Alvaro Obregon.
Guillermo Tovar de Teresa Museum
The Guillermo Tovar de Teresa Museum is a must for those wishing to explore the art-deco mansions and witness the fineries of the aristocracy who once resided here. This gorgeous historic mansion is a pleasure to wander through.
Much like many museums in the city, entrance to the mansion is free, and you can spend as long as you like here.
Throughout this property, you will gain a beautiful insight into the heritage of high-end design and witness some fascinating portraits and elegant furnishings from times gone by. The house can be found on Valladolid Street, number 52.
Parks & Monuments
Much of the joy in this neighborhood will be in the pretty areas you stumble upon as you wander, such as the parks and monuments throughout Roma Norte. Exploring green and open spaces within the bustling cityscape is a window into how locals live.
These green havens provide a soothing retreat from urban life and a perfect chance to people-watch.
Plaza Rio De Janeiro
The quaint Plaza Rio De Janeiro, found just behind the MODO museum, is the perfect example. The park has a full-scale replica of Michelangelo’s David Statue in the center, surrounded by vertical fountains and quiet seating areas.
This park also offers tranquil walkways through the greenery, making you feel far away from the bustle of the city streets. There are some tasty food spots and cafes around Plaza Río de Janeiro, too, an ideal way to spend an afternoon.
Plaza Luis Cabrera
A little further south of Alvaro Obregon, you will also find Plaza Luis Cabrera, another wonderful example of these open spaces that bring a little calm to the noise. This is slightly smaller than Rio de Janeiro, yet you will find art installations, fountains, and even a little skate park.
Fuente de Cibeles
As the evening draws in, heading to Fuente de Cibeles is a fantastic idea. While technically a roundabout, this feels like a pedestrian-friendly spot with several bars and restaurants around, giving it a European feel. Sitting outside here enjoying a beer and a meal is a lovely way to close the day out in Roma Norte.
View the Architecture and Street Art
Roma Norte’s architecture acts as a canvas for its quirky character. From Beaux-Art mansions along Rio de Janeiro Avenue to the Artistic flair of Avenida Álvaro Obregón, each street boasts architectural masterpieces, telling tales of the neighborhood’s past. However, if you prefer modern structures, the Spanish Cultural Center’s glass facade offers a contrast. Remember, though, keep your camera ready!
Boutique Shops And Vintage Stores
Retail therapy finds a new meaning in Roma Norte. Narrow streets lined with boutique shops provide craftsmanship rarely found elsewhere. From traditional pottery at Mercado Medellín to vintage clothing at Goodbye Folk, there’s something for everyone. Remember, though, keep some space in your luggage!
Embrace the experiences Roma Norte offers, and you’ll become more than just a visitor. Rather, you’ll become part of its vibrant tapestry, pulsating heartbeat, and memorable story. Enjoy Roma Norte in your way—make it your own.
Roma Norte Restaurants
In an explosion of flavors, Roma Norte lives up to its reputation as a gastronomic paradise. Diversity, quality, and creativity mark its culinary landscape. Roaming the streets, you’ll discover various dining options, from traditional Mexican delicacies served in street food stalls to gourmet dishes in stylish restaurants.
Street Food
Like the rest of the city, street food is everywhere in Roma Norte, but knowing where to go is key. Many will flock to trendy spots when they are here, and while that is no problem, the less-known street food is too good to ignore.
One of my favorite taco stands here is Tacos Chanito, on the corner of Colima and Merida. This spot offers basic taco options like suadero (a thin cut of supple beef), pastor (the classic marinated pork), and longaniza (chorizo-style sausage). The food is served quickly, and you and a friend can comfortably eat three or four tacos each for less than ten bucks.
Another great option is Jenni’s Street Quesadillas, yet again on Colima, it is a must-visit spot. There is an enormous range of fillings here, such as longaniza and potato, cheese, meat, mushrooms, slow-roasted pork, and more.
Jenni’s is run by three women who are more than happy to help you figure out each ingredient. For around 5 US dollars, you can buy three delicious quesadillas that burst with flavor.
Alternatively, if you are vegan or simply fancy a meat-free option, Roma Norte has got you covered. Head to Gatorta on Puebla 182, where you’ll find a delightful food truck serving delicious meat-free snacks.
From tacos to sandwiches, hot dogs to tiramisu, the portions are huge, the food is outstanding, and so unassuming is the spot; many have no idea just how good this place is.
If you stumble upon a street food stand you haven’t heard of, the rule of thumb is to always ensure it is busy with locals; they never miss!
Cafes
There is a strong cafe culture in Colonia Roma, and tourists will find a range of themed cafes and quality Mexican coffee to enjoy as they wander the neighborhood. Everyone finds a home in Roma Norte’s cafes, from coffee connoisseurs to casual latte lovers.
One of my favorite spots is the Compay espresso bar, a cozy nook just south of Fuente de Cibeles with a simple menu of outstanding coffee. The atmosphere is relaxed, the coffee exquisite, and the snacks are to die for.
For those who want an idyllic atmosphere, Cafebreria El Pendulo is often a favorite for locals and tourists alike. This quaint bookshop-cum-cafe, serves delicious brews amid shelves brimming with books across two stories.
If you do end up wiling away some time at the relaxing Plaza Rio de Janeiro, don’t hesitate to grab a coffee and a pastry from the delightful Panaderia Rosetta. Try the guava and cheese pastry or roast beef sandwich with your coffee, and then head to the Plaza for a mini picnic.
Restaurants
If you ask ten random people around the Roma Neighborhood what the best restaurants are, you’ll likely get ten different answers; such is the outstanding range of options here. Whether you’re looking for Mexican classics, food from Latin America, groundbreaking fusion restaurants, classic French cooking, or upscale restaurants that will blow your mind, you can find it all in the Roma Norte neighborhood.
However, I will give you a brief rundown of some of my favorite restaurants in the Roma Norte area and what I like to eat there.
Maximo Bistrot
A fine-dining restaurant set in an old market, it serves a range of creative seafood and meat dishes, as featured on Netflix’s Chef’s Table show. The tasting menu is a great option here to sample a little bit of everything, and I’d suggest pairing it with wine, too.
If you order off the menu, I’d recommend the suckling pig; it is outstanding. The service is between 1 pm and 3 pm, and the evening service runs between 5 pm and 10 pm. Book ahead to avoid disappointment.
Pizza Felix
Adventurous dishes and fine dining always have their place, but sometimes, a tasty pizza is all you fancy after a long day. There are a few great spots throughout Colonia Roma, but Pizza Felix is generally my go-to.
I love that they cover all the classics and add slightly more creative options, such as the Toni Servillo with homemade ricotta, aubergine, and parmesan. The pizzas are fired quickly, the drink options are solid, and it is the perfect comfort food spot.
Contramar
Further showcasing Colonia Roma Norte’s wide range of quality food options, this seafood restaurant is consistently outstanding. Often, highly rated places don’t live up to the hype, yet this can not be said of Contramar.
Here, you will find various seafood dishes such as crab tacos, octopus with black sauce, tuna tostadas, and my favorite, ceviche. Again, you will need to reserve ahead of time to enjoy this delicious cuisine.
Best Bars in Roma Norte Mexico City
Mexico City has every type of bar you could dream of, and here in Roma Norte, we pack in many of them. Whether you want an upmarket cocktail bar, a local dive bar, or somewhere with live music, sports, or even a crazy theme, Roma Norte is the place to be.
Here are some of the bars I’d recommend whether you fancy some slow daytime drinks or for living it up after dark.
Licorería Limantour
It would be remiss of me not to kick off with the bar that has gained the most accolades in the neighborhood, Licorería Limantour. Since opening in 2011, the bar has consistently featured on the World 50 Best Bar list and currently sits at number 7.
The reason for its fame? Undoubtedly, the creative cocktails and love with which they are prepared. The place is designed with community in mind, with comfortable seats close to one another and communal tables.
Pro Tip: Try out the Margarita al Pastor cocktail, a signature drink to die for.
Café Tacobar
Now, here is a personal favorite haunt of mine that you are sure to love: Café Tacobar. This small place is the perfect hole-in-the-wall bar for late afternoon and evening drinks. With its slender bar and small capacity, there is a very intimate feel here.
Behind the bar, the owner and his staff showcase extensive knowledge of Mexican and international drinks, plus impressive mixology skills. If you’re feeling peckish as you sip one of their signature cocktails, there is a small selection of tasty tacos prepared right there at the bar.
This place gets packed out quickly, so ensure you don’t arrive too late, or you may miss out on this awesome experience.
Café de Nadie
Café de Nadie is a laid-back cocktail bar with outdoor seating and a beautiful interior. In addition to their high-quality cocktails, they have an extensive record collection, which they spin all day. In addition to the grooves and drinks, there is a small yet delicious menu featuring oysters, ceviche, and snacks.
Whether you are looking for a boozy brunch, a late afternoon buzz, or a fun night with cocktails and a DJ, this is a great place to consider.
Speakeasies
Across Mexico City’s Roma neighborhood, there are several speakeasies for something a little different.
Musak is the one I would recommend during your stay. It looks like a typical restaurant, which, incidentally, has great food, but there is a secret door you’ll be guided through if you ask.
Once through the door, you’ll find yourself in a labyrinth of hallways that lead to one of the best bars in the city. The focus here is on high-quality live music and outstanding acoustics. If this is your bag, don’t miss out on Musaak during your time in Roma Norte.
Best Nightlife in Roma Norte
If you are looking to live it up, there are two spots in particular that I think you will enjoy. This neighborhood has a vibrant nightlife scene, but these are my picks where you can dance and drink to your heart’s content.
Departamento
This first option is fantastic for weekend fun, where DJs play until the early hours. It has two floors, including an open-air terrace, and each floor has a different DJ. The cover charge is currently $250 pesos and is well worth the price.
Departmento gets a fantastic crowd who love to dance the night away. While the club gets busy, they manage it well so that there is always space for you to have fun.
Supra Roma Rooftop
My second recommendation is Supra Rooftop, which offers stunning views across the city. This multi-functional spot serves as a restaurant during the day, a fun bar during the afternoon, and an awesome club at night.
The rooftop sits on the 14th floor of a building right on Alvaro Obregon. This central location makes it the perfect option for your stay here.
The open-air terrace is a great place to chat and drink with your friends or enjoy a bite to eat while listening to smooth grooves. Should you wish to turn things up, head down into the club area for some hard-hitting Latin and EDM music and get your groove on.

Roma Norte Hotels
To kick off, there are two hotels that I generally recommend to my friends and family when staying in this magical neighborhood. Both options provide excellent service and beautiful rooms.
Hotel Luca
This central hotel is on the street Orizaba, a fantastic location in the heart of the action. Guests love the spacious and comfortable rooms, and everyone I know who’s stayed here comments on how great all of the staff are.
This hotel also has a beautiful terrace where you can enjoy breakfast under the sun or an afternoon tipple if you are looking to take the weight off before you head out for the night.
Stanza Hotel
Another much-loved option in the neighborhood is the Stanza Hotel. Guests love the comfortable beds here, and the service is always talked about. You can arrange tours from the hotel and get information on what’s happening in and around Roma.
This 4-star hotel’s cost is also very reasonable. Rooms are just under a hundred bucks, a great price given its central location in Roma Norte.
Boutique Hotels
A stay in Roma Norte is incomplete without experiencing one of the enchanting boutique hotels. Small in size but big in personality, these accommodations reflect the artistic and cultural essence of the area.
La Valise
La Valise is a charming boutique hotel that offers three beautifully designed rooms with superb city views. Each room combines classic Mexican architecture with a contemporary design that utilizes natural colors and textures and an array of green plants for a special feel when you are there.
This place is well designed and super comfortable. It is located on a quiet street, offering respite during your stay in the busy neighborhood.
Brick Hotel
This 4-star hotel, set between Calle Colima and Calle Tabasco, offers luxurious amenities and outstanding service and is surprisingly quiet, given its central location in the Roma Norte neighborhood.
The hotel is a perfect example of modern contemporary design, and each room is lovingly designed with comfort and luxury in mind. In addition, you can expect exceptional service from the staff, who are committed to making sure that your stay in Mexico is amazing.
Airbnb Roma Norte
Choosing an Airbnb in Roma Norte provides a local residential experience as an alternative to hotels. It’s a preferred choice for travelers desiring to live like the locals, within walking distance of the main sights.
Here, you can find art-draped lofts that offer views of tree-lined streets, and vibrant Mexican-designed living areas provide a complete homely experience.
For those seeking a more modern stay, there are plenty of contemporary one-bedroom apartments with a splash of colorful interiors and rooftops to enjoy Mexico City’s skyline.

Picking the right area to stay in Roma Norte depends on your interests. If you’re a fan of architecture and green spaces, selecting accommodation near Plaza Rio de Janeiro gives you easy access to fascinating colonial and art deco architecture.
If food and nightlife are your main motivators, select a stay around Alvaro Obregon Street – a hub of the best restaurants and bars. So, depending on your preference, you can choose an optimal location for your stay in Roma Norte, thus making your visit memorable.
